Priya Nair came to Riverside from a regional MPO where she led complete-streets policy. She is known in city hall for translating engineering metrics into language council members understand.

How did you address privacy concerns about cameras?

We published our data retention and anonymization policy before installation began. Edge devices process counts and speeds locally — only aggregated metrics reach the central platform. We held two public forums. Transparency upfront cost us time and saved us months of backlash later.

What do residents say?

They do not talk about adaptive signals. They say the commute is better. That is exactly what we want. The open data portal gets more traffic from local journalists and advocacy groups — that transparency builds trust even when people do not understand the technology.
